There is a magnificent selection of museums in Miami, with complexes including probably some of the best historic collections in the area. Exhibitions in Miami range from large to small, local to international and many are located in beautiful Miami buildings, right in the heart of Miami.

The large American Police Hall of Fame and Museum is situated in Downtown Miami and is instantly recognizable by the police car that is dramatically fixed on its vertical, exterior wall at the front. The museum is full of education exhibits and displays and attractions include more than 10,000 items relating to law enforcement in Miami and America as as whole. These include a jail cell, a retired gas chamber, a real electric chair, complete with descriptions of how prisoners were executed in this chair, information on famous convicted criminals, futurist police equipment, a marble memorial and there is also a crime scene, where you have to examine the clues to solve the crime.

Located in Downtown Miami, the Historical Museum of Southern Florida uses traditional and state-of-the-art exhibitions and installations to chronicle to lives of the people that played an important part in the history of South Florida. With a number of interactive displays, such as an old Miami streetcar, there are exhibits depicting Miami and the surrounding areas many years before Europe was aware of the existence of this 'New World'. One of the museum's most popular exhibits recounts the unusual influence that railroads had in bringing Miami and the rest of South Florida into the American cultural mainstream.
Museum open: Monday to Wednesday - 10:00 to 17:00, Thursday and Saturday - 10:00 to 21:00, Sunday - 12:00 to 17:00
Museum admission: charge, discounts available for children between 6 to 12 years old, children under 6 years old are free

The Gold Coast Railroad Museum is one of Miami's most popular and impressive museums. Home to around 30 large, retired locomotives, Miami's Gold Coast Railroad Museum features many trains and carriages of important historical significance. Of particular interest is the Ferdinand Magellan, a 1928 Pullman sleeping car redesigned in 1942 for President Franklin Roosevelt, with 3-inch bullet resistant glass and an observation lounge, which is now actually designated as a national historic landmark. A train ride is included in the price of admission at the museum.

Miami Museums: Florida Pioneer Museum - 826 Krome Avenue, South Miami, Miami, Florida, USA

Situated between North-West 8th and 9th Streets, Miami's Florida Pioneer Museum is a small and informative museum of local pioneer and Indian artifacts. The building itself is a good example of typical South Dade's architecture, featuring a shady verandah, peaked roof, attic area and dormer windows. Built in 1904 as a house, by a Florida East Coast Railroad station agent, the Florida Pioneer Museum moved to this site in 1964 and was the nation's last railroad frontier. The old caboose situated outside is thought to be one of the few wooden models still in existence today.

Arch Creek Park can be found in the North Miami Beach district of Miami and is a small park, full of wildlife, native plants and interesting nature trails. One of the main attractions at Miami's Arch Creek Park in the Arch Creek Museum, which is a nature center, full of historic artifacts from the Miami area. Picnic areas are available and there are often special events in the park.

Miami's Weeks Air Museum is situated in the south-west of Downtown Miami and provides a fascinating insight into the history of aviation. With many interest exhibits, including a number of well-preserved planes of historical significance, the Weeks Air Museum has assembled an impressive fleet of more than 30 vintage aircraft, many of which are in perfect flying condition. Of particular interest are some of the burly war planes that were an important part of the second World War.

Located in South Miami, close to Biscayne Bay, the Deering Estate is a wildlife haven covering more than 400 acres and is full of native plants and animals. The Deering Estate is also home to the Miami Environmental Center Museum, which is an interesting museum with many exhibits about the area.
